I heard about disease that can be fatal in children and is caused by aspirin. It’s Reye\’s syndrome. I’ve never heard or read that it really happened to someone. Please tell me more. Is it dose dependent? What are the symptoms of reye’s syndrome in infants?
Reye’s syndrome is disease that affects all organs, but liver and brain the most lethally. It affects children and appears soon after flu caused by virus that might be asymptomatic. Ingestion of salycilates is believed that causes Reye’s syndrome. Its incidence is 1 per million. First signs are vomiting, severe tiredness, confusion and convulsions. That’s why paracetamol and ibuprofen are recommended in pediatric.
