Hi, I am recovering from rhinoplasty, and still my nose is very swollen. Is it normal to react in that way? Already, a week has passed from operation.

Hi, it is not usual to have post operational swelling for so long. Are you satisfied with your present appearance and functions of respiratory system? When I had a surgery, I was very surprised to be able to smell all the things I haven’t smelled for the long time. But, unfortunately unpleasant smells are noticeable to me again also. my breathing has improved a lot, although I am a little congested because of allergy. When my nasal passages are clear, it is incredibly a lot of air I am getting. Every day I am feeling better and better and hope to have much better respiration from now on.

Some swelling is definitely normal -- particularly if your nose required a break to reset it narrower, or if your nose had been broken before, or other such more difficult things.

If you have excessive swelling, you may not be following all of the post-op directions to the letter. You really need to rest -- sit on the couch basically all day -- no forward bending, no air conditioning or dust or other drying agents, don't blow your nose, no crunch food, no gum chewing, no blood thinning or other medications (other than doctor instructed medications), and so on. Read through that the post-op instruction list again to make sure you're following everything as it says.

And certainly check with your doctor or doctor's office (nurse, etc.) to get a response to your specific case or if you have specific questions.
