I would like to know what the Risks are for having fat embolisms occur when having bilateral knee replacements done.

According to the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia (2002), fat embolism occurs in almost all lower extremity trauma surgery. Fat embolism syndrome (FES), a severe form of fat embolism that involves multiple organs, has an incidence of less than 1%. Overall occurrence of fat embolism varies between 11-29%. Overall mortality varies between 7-20%.
The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (2008) reported that the use of intraoperative Swan ganz catheter monitor helps to identify patients who are at risk of FES following unilateral knee replacement. An increase in pulmonary vascular resistance following the first knee surgery suggested that fat embolism possibly had already occurred, and that surgery on the second knee needed to be postponed.
