Synthyroid is the same medicine as Levothyroxine, used to treat hypothyroidism. Levothyroxine comes as a tablet, to be taken by mouth, and is usually taken once a day. Patient should take it on an empty stomach, 1/2 to 1 hour before breakfast. Synthyroid is a thyroid hormone, is used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormone. Without this hormone, the body cannot function properly, resulting in lack of energy, weight gain, hair loss, dry thick skin, etc. When Synthyroid is taken correctly, it reverses these symptoms, and significantly helps patients. After this usage, Synthyroid is also used to treat congenital hypothyroidism and
goiter. There is reported one more kind of usage of this drug, as treating obesity. Off course, it should not be used to treat obesity in patients with normal
thyroid function. Synthyroid is ineffective for weight reduction in normal thyroid patients and may cause serious or life-threatening toxicity.
