The most common cause of a dry mouth is prescription medications such as antidepressants, muscle relaxers, anti-psychotic, antihistamines, anxiolytics and many other medications.
Some systemic diseases such as Lupus or Sjogrens, can cause a dry mouth as well. During cancer treatment, radiation and chemotherapy may contribute to dry mouth by destroying the salivary glands. Rarely, dry mouth is result of stones or tumors within salivary gland. Also a cancer can develop in the tube connecting the salivary gland to the mouth. Old people produce less saliva than younger.
