Hi. My husband and I are trying to have a baby, but we are really worried about it. Schizophrenia is present in my husband`s family and we are afraid that we will pass it on our child. What are the chances for that?
Hi. Schizophrenia is a complex disease and nobody knows for sure what causes it. Genetic factors has its` role - person who have somebody in the family with schizophrenia, is more likely to get the disease. Schizophrenia occurs in 1% of the general population. However, 10% of people who have parents, brothers and sisters with schizophrenia, will get this disorder. Symptoms of schizophrenia usually appear in your late 20s-30s.
