Researchers believe they found that the purpose of the appendix is to produce and protects good germs for people’s gut.

For years people believed that the appendix is useless and that it only brings trouble, that it has no function whatsoever and that people can live without it just fine.

Human body contains more bacteria than human cells and most of them are good and help digest food but sometimes the flora of bacteria in the intestines die and some diseases such as amoebic dysentery clear the gut of useful bacteria. Appendix’s job is to reboot the digestive tract if that happens.

The appendix’s location is bellow the normal flow of food and it acts like a good safe house for bacteria, cultivating the good germs. But even though it seems that it has a function, people still get infections and have to remove it if it’s inflamed cause if they don’t it could turn deadly.

Some scientists who were not involved with this research said that this theory makes sense and it raises interesting questions.
