I don't think 80% of surgeries fail...my surgery did SO much good for me and I lead a normal life with it, and I think the aches and pains are just part of it. Sometimes my lower back gets sore and my neck etc but I think that's just part of what comes with this sort of thing.....it would be worse if I had never had the surgery, that's for sure. I'd look like the hunchback of notredame by now.
Hmm.... |

| I had surgery 9 years ago and continue to have lower back pain. The surgery also tilted my rib cage slightly which causes problems. My surgery is considered 100% successful, but I'm wondering if I should get a second opinion. Are these results normal? |

| My 16 year old daughter has thoraco-lumbar scoliosis which has progressed to the point of considering surgery as an option. Even after yoga, chiropractic and myofascial massage her curve has increased. For those of you who had surgery...what kind of suggestions would you have for post operative care? Were there any problems with pregnancies? If you are experiencing neck pain where does your fusion began and end? Have you had any physical limitations resulting from the surgery? |

Hi.
I had scoliosis surgery with a herrington rod 13 years ago. My spine was extremly curved, maybe 60 degrees.
Now I am a healthy, normal 23 year old getting married in several months. I played basketball, softball, tennis, and volleyball in high school.
I just had a x-ray and everything looks normal. I have some lower back pain occassionally, but exercise helps. I would reccomend surgery 100%. I went to U of M for my surgery and my Dr. was excellent. |

If you are a parent try not to worry. My dad fainted when he heard that I was having surgery. It was a hard road but once you cross it you will be happy seeing that your child is having a normal life. |

Hi There, I too have scoliosis. I have a great chiro that I see and a program that I am currently undertaking to help correct my spine and neck. I do agree some chiro's are in the job for making money, however there are some great ones out there. I know that scoliosis is not going to be corrected overnight. I went to see my chiro, he did an examination, including x-rays so I could see the damage myself, we then started the 6 week program of going twice a week. On visit 13 we will take more x-rays and he will show me the improvement, so I have the proof myself. The visits will then decrease to once a week for a month, then once a fortnight for a month, then just once a month for example when my back starts to hold itself in the correct position. The chiro also gives you exercises to help strengthen the muscles around your spine to assist with the holding.
I am only on week 3 of my visits but I can feel the difference. I had so many side effects and pain from my nerves being pinched and my muscles felt like they were cramping. Headaches, dizziness, digestive problems, skin conditions, hearing issues, you name it (there are 100 of symptoms) they can all stem from sublaxtions in your back pinching nerves. I have noticed an improvement in all of these areas and am so glad I did something about it. I have no opinion on surgery as whoever you ask will tell you something else to try but I just wanted to share my experience. Thanks PS - I am not a chiro. |

| chiropractic manipulation is useless to correct lordotic curves and especially kyphosis. Even Milwaukee braces worn during adolescence can result in relapse as patient becomes an adult. The only way to correct scoliotic curves above 30 degrees is surgery, period. Chiropractors are not even allowed to prescribe medications. You have minimal education and are not qualified to render an opinion in this case. |

My surgery was 33 years ago. Wore 1 cast for 6 months and one for 3 months and then a corset. No pain at all throught the years.
Last 2-3 years I feel pain gradually stronger pain and more frequent.
Don't know how much is because I am older. My lower back pain is a throbbing burning constant pain and then some days it doesnt hurt. Even hurts when I am laying down or coughing or moving on some days. More when I sit than stand. |

I had surgery for scoliosis 20 yrs ago, then a rod replacement 10 yrs ago, and 5 yrs after the 2nd surgery, got whiplash in a car accident. My chiropractor found that my neck was straight, not curved naturally, and said it was normal from whiplash, however, he could NOT help me alleviate the restricted motion or pain...1 yr later a D.O. fixed me up in 3 months, all except for the straightened neck. Now I know it's getting worse with all the recent pain esp when riding a bike. It feels like my neck is stiff like a pole and it hurts a LOT. I'm researching this before I call a Dr because I don't know who to call yet. I fear another surgery is the only answer... |
