Hi, my grandmother also suffered a disorder of thyroid gland due to inappropriate amount of iodine in the soil of our region. Actually, many people had goiter, enlargement of thyroid gland, as a result of hypothyroidism, so it was easy to distinguish this disease. Sometimes, deficiency of selenium is responsible for thyroid disorder. Selenium is needed in iodine metabolism, and therefore essential in thyroid gland function. Some researches showed that supplementation of minerals, containing selenium, decreased development of goiter in regions poor with this mineral.
