Severe itching after showering

Like the rest of you, I am sooo glad I found this site. I have had this for 37 years, I have only met one other person who had this, and I didn't know what works then. I have found that hot as I can stand it water works pretty good, so I do think it is temperature related, for me cold water brings on my "itch attacks".
But the last few years I have been taking hot baths with oil in the water. I have a lot fewer attacks now. Lotion made the attacks worse as did scratching. I have found it difficult to find bath oil, bath salts are more popular, but they make it worse. If I found bath oil it was very expensive and I need at least 4 tbls for each bath. I finally found oil for hot oil treatments for hair at the beauty supply store. it is the cheapest yet most effective in my case.
I also think that stress is involved. I have an anxiety disorder. My son had this for a few years during his father and I's divorce. I believe his was from anxiety.

I have been itching after shower's for about 4 years now. Maybe a change in chemistry? My legs get so itchy that it's painful and I can't stop scratching. The only thing I can do to relieve the itch is apply lotion right after a shower.
It is definately not the water. We just installed a complete home water filteration system and I still itch.

This condition can also be caused by a lack of Vitamin B in the diet or (in my case, unfortunately) chronic alcoholism.

If you drink excessively, try giving it up...trust me, the itching alone will help you stay away from the sauce. After a couple of weeks of detox, see if the condition improves but, I warn you, it may take up to a year for the condition to subside because the condition can also be caused by damage done to the liver in the meantime...it may have to heal awhile first.

Vitamin B12 helped for awhile, but in my case there was only one answer. ")

i am 16 and i just started getting this condition last year. i found out at that same time i am lactose intollerant. at that time i started working at an icecream store and it would seem every time i shower after having a bit of dairy, like a big milkshake, i get itching around my whole body... i was reading and maybe it does have to do with alergies.. or maybe in my case just a coincidence

I am 28 years old, and i have been itching from last 15 years, nothing works for me nothing, it itches allot and allot, sometime i hate myself because of this, it never itches except i take shower, hot water, cold water, quick shower, long shower, Allegra, other anti allergic nothing works for me, i take shower once in a week and it itches like hell... Crying or Very sad

a have no idea what is this, people who are saying something its all speculation no trustworthy answer, so if you know what is this please mail me at ******** i will be extremely thankful to the person..any skin expert or somebody...who can help me out...

I have also have this issue, I find it worse with more drying soaps. I like Dr Bronner's liquid almond soap, and after a shower "The Medicine Shop Pharmacy's generic version of Cetaphil lotion , I add some olive almond and vitamin e oil to the bottle that I bought at a local Walmart. If I use it right after I dry I don't itch, and if I do it is literally like 1=2 quick itches that go away as opposed to constant itching on my entire body.I do believe it is they skin being dried out and lotions and soaps that irritate. I just took a shower and thought some eucalyptus spearmint lotion would be relaxing before bed, not, it had me itching like crazy, I had to get in the shower wash it off and put on my Medicine Shoppe lotion.Also if I don't use any lotion or one that is not a good moisturizer i I will itch,I will also itch if the lotion is too heavy like my skin cant breathe. Natures Gate hemp seed oil lotion is also a good one.

I’ve had this problem since I can remember, I am 43. Right now I am having an attack due to sweat, "I just cut the grass". For me sweat and water are the triggers, I learned to live with it and fortunately it comes and goes but when it comes only you guys know what is like, others will think we are exaggerating. When it comes it stays for months…
What I have found: Laundry that is not well rinsed, starts the problem, A cold environment in the shower after I’m finish and naked will trigger and attack, I have a Very intense light red in my bathroom it was in the house when we moved in, I do not know the name but it helps, ask at home depot, it generates heat. Very dry towels help, getting my shirt on quickly helps, lose clothing helps; I will try the hot showers and let you know.
Why does to come and go on my case? I do not know I just count my blessings.
I found this today; finally I have a name for my condition: Aquagenic pruritus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquagenic_pruritus.

I 2 had this problem 4 yrs. Get out of shower and the fun starts, i could itch from 10mins to 2 hrs after each shower. I tried everything that i could think of from bar soap, liquid soap, oil to lotion from hot water to cold and Nothing help. Thanks to the internet and some research and my Doctor my problem is over. What i learned is i have a form of Psoriasis a kind of skin disorder. And from my doctor i learned its a form of arthritis, psoriatic arthritis. From there i found treatment that works. I 1st started with tanning, as long as i tanned either in the sun or a tanning bed i had no problem. And it was from the 1st day i tanned, PROBLEM DONE! Words cannot tell the relief you have when this itching after every shower or getting wet for that matter is over. Then i learned of another option that i use now. Drying off with a towel that's made of 100% cotton. I pat dry and it works great not had a problem in over 3 yrs. Pat dry don't wipe or rub dry works for me, seems simple .......try it. Turns out i have "MANY" forms of arthritis. I have benn diagnosed with DDD, DISH, Psoriasis and Ankylosing Spondylitis. All form of arthritis. I never would of guessed that my itching problem was from arthritis. Hope this helps at least 1 person.

I have been battling with this issue for many years. I have tried everything to stop the itch. It started happening after I would swim, either in the pool or the ocean, then it went to warm water cold water. The only thing that stops the itch is HOT water so hot, that I feel as though I may burn my skin off. I know for me, the only thing is so frustrating is no one understand the pain that is associated with this problem. I told a doctor once, when the attacks hitm "IF, I had a straight blade in the house, I think I would remove my skin" he looked at me as though I was crazy. I have tried lotions (I was told it was due to dry skin, probably from the HOT showers...) as soon as I put lotion on, I am running for the hot water again. Life with this is hellish to say the least. I really thought I was alone in this issue...JerryR, I will be contacting my doctor to arrange for blood test to see if I have any forms of arthritis, at least it is a starting point for me...Thanks to you for another avenue. I have noticed that it seems to run along major nerves, so perhaps this is another avenue . I have not skin rashes, no markings other than perhaps the burn marks from the hot water Wink

. Not that I wish this condition on anyone, but at least I now know that I am not alone...and that helps.

Hello everyone,

This is my first time here.

I glanced through this post and I didn't see one thing about using a shower filter.

I saw that this may not apply to every itching problem expressed here but I understand that chlorine and chlorine compounds may cause itching after showering.

I am not an expert but I think a shower filter may be an appropriate solution for some of the itching problems.
