Shoulder Separation Complications

Hi. I was playing hockey and I injured my shoulder. The bones are not out of position, but it hurts bad. Is surgery necessary? What are shoulder separation surgery complications?

Hi. I had a similar injury. Sounds to me like a type I shoulder separation. Surgery is not necessary in all cases. Type I and II shoulder separations are the most common types of this injury. Type IV, V and VI require surgery. However, these injuries are very uncommon. If non-operative treatment doesn`t prove to be effective, surgery may be recommended. Every surgery is followed by complications. Complications of shoulder separation surgery include loss of reduction of the clavicle, clavicle fracture, infection, painful scar and deltoid muscle detachment.
