Hi, apnea means without breath. People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing during the sleep. If it happens for hundreds of times during the night, even for a minute or longer, it is called snoring. Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by a blockage of the airway, when the soft tissue in the throat collapses. There is also a disorder where the brain fails to stimulate breathing, by acting on breath muscles. Risk factors include being male, overweight but even children develop it.
