Smoking is one of the major death causes around the world. Smoking has been found to increase risks of heart attacks and strokes, respiratory problems, lung and other types of cancers. New researches link smoking to increased risks of contracting HIV infection.

Five out of six studies done in order to question the link between smoking and HIV showed that smokers were at high risk of becoming infected by the HIV virus. Luckily, smoking hasn’t been found to affect the progress of HIV to AIDS.

The studies conducted revealed that smoking could be modifying a variety of immune system responses and in that way increasing the susceptibility of HIV infections.

Researchers are hoping that this new finding will improve the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS prevention programs and have at least some influence on smokers although the last one is highly unlikely.
