New study found that people who use alcohol and tobacco and are infected with HPV16 (Human Papiloma Virus type 16) have no increased risk of developing head and neck cancer. Study findings clearly represent that these cancers have two distinct causes and represent two different classes of cancer which require different treatments.

This two types of cancer mostly represent male diseases. Study reports that if boys and man receive HPV vaccine it could prevent lots of head and neck cancers. During the study subjects were asked to fill questionnaires about age, sex, smoking and consumption of alcohol. Subjects were also asked to give blood sample which determined who among them is infected with HPV16.

Researchers did a statistical analysis and estimated the effects of different risk factors. Results of the study showed clearly that smoking and alcohol consumption didn’t increased risk of developing head and neck cancer among patients diagnosed with HPV16.
