Previous researches found smoking had negative effects on the ovaries and reduced conception chances because of these effects. However, new findings show that smoking actually negatively affects the uterus damaging its lining and impairs the chances of a fetus implanting in the uterus.

This is the first study to show the clinical impact of cigarette smoking on uterine receptiveness.

The fact that smoking affects uterine receptiveness doesn’t mean that it doesn’t affect ovaries because it does. Heavy smokers are more prone to ovulatory dysfunction and to early menopause.

The study included women who were receiving oocyte donations as part of in vitro fertilization. It included 741 non-heavy smokers (under 10 cigarettes a day) and 44 heavy smokers (over 10 cigarettes a day). The women’s partners were non-smokers and so were the donors.

The study showed that lighter smokers had higher pregnancy rates (52.2 percent) than the heavy smokers (34.1 percent) did.

It was also noticed that heavy smokers had about double the rate of multiple pregnancies. The exact reason is not known but health experts believe that different women may be responding differently to cigarette smoking.

The following study will examine genetics influence. Scientists are planning to investigate which of the key molecules involved in the implantation process may be changing in heavy smokers.

Although the study gave us some new facts, the point hasn’t changed. Smoking should be quit before conceiving as healthy pregnancy starts with a healthy mother.
