What are the risk factors for spina bifida defect? I’m 2 months pregnant and recently watched a movie with girl that had spina bifida. What actually cause it? Please post.
Medications like valproic acid that is used in epilepsy cause spina bifida defect. This drug interferes with natural metabolic pathway of folic acid. Folic acid deficiency causes neural tube defect. Risk factors are diabetes, obesity, high body temperature in early pregnancy. Hope that this helped.
