Hi, spina bifida is the most common permanently disabling birth defect. Spina Bifida develops during pregnancy, in first months. The disease occurs if the spinal column doesn’t close completely. There are many women at risk of having a baby with Spina Bifida. The disease is seen in every affected person in other way. Hydrocephalus or fluid on the brain is present in many children with spina bifida, so they need surgery to insert a “shunt” that helps drain the fluid. They have this shunt for the lifetime. They are also fully or partially paralyzed, with bladder and bowel control disorders and learning disabilities.
