To start, for myself I don't think this exactly qualifies as an eatting disorder, as I feel I can control myself. Im a male, age 23, 5'10 at 180lbs, no previous eatting disorders. I wanted to lose some weight (10-20 lbs) for the summer and I've been pedaling hard on my exercise bike, doing situps, etc etc I have a good workout planned. I eat (what I swallow) pretty healthily. I wanted to take some weight off quicker and from pretty much out of the blue I found myself chew spitting. Been doing it about 6 weeks...

Here's where I seem to differ from most folks on here that're doing this. I have a bowl of Total and skim milk for breakfast, a can of soup for lunch, all eatten no spitting. If for dinner tonight I was going to have a 1.5 lb steak and salad what I'll do is eat about half the steak, the other half winds up chewed up and spit out. When I spit I wash my mouth out and spit that too. If I make some french fries or if I have some chips or something about 75% of that gets chewed and spit. If I made 6 tacos Id eat about 4 and 2 tacos worth would get spit out. I haven't been binging on buying food to chew and spit, I might grab a bag of pork rinds now and then that I otherwise wouldn't have and I chew and spit it about 1/3 the bag in a sitting, or have a bowl of ice cream when before I just would've gone without. My diet now that Im chew/spitting is pretty much the same as before, just now Id only eat .75 lbs of steak instead of 1.5lbs, and the chips go into a bag instead of into my stomach. I'm still definately eatting enough calories and getting enough nutrients to healthily sustain me, I always have the energy and motivation to keep working out... I'm going to take a break just to make sure I don't 'need' to do it, but Im pretty sure it'll be no sweat, as some days I just stick to the heathly food to avoid chew spitting. Im not at all ashamed of it, and dont really worry about being caught.... What Im looking for is some advice on whether or not you guys think Im in the danger zone for developing a problem, or a health concern, or if I'll probably start gaining weight instead. Im very good about not 'letting a little slide down the hatch' as I saw someone else put it, and I rinse well after I spit. Is this a problem?

-Mike

Edit: I just took a quick reread and wanted to say I hope noone takes any offense, becuase none was meant... it sounds a bit sterile but when I wrote it I was worrying about being precise and getting the situation across accurately. Smile

I have been under chew and spit's wrath for almost 5 years... I started out like you... wanting to lose a little weight and before I knew it I "discovered" a way to taste any food I wanted to w/o worrying about consuming calories (or very little) since I wasn't swallowing the food. Chew and spit (c/s) is an eating disorder!! It is a modified way of binging and purging and a form of anorexia, at least for me. I realized I am tricking my body to think I am eating, when I'm not. So I'll c/s just about anything but actually eat a salad or some egg whites, etc. With a combination of this and working out, I've lost 25 pounds in the last year. I've become very focused. However, I've noticed the enamel on my teeth is wearing, my gum line is receding, I have stains on my clothes because of the "spitting" part. Also, it is very expensive. I am spending about 10 dollars a day on c/s food. I have isolated myself b/c I need to be alone when I do this. I hate c/s. But at the same time I love it. Anyways, back to you... Please stop the habit. I've been trying to stop for about a year now, with no luck. Granted counseling will probably be the only way for me since I am not strong enough to stop doing something that made me so successful in the one thing I wanted: to lose weight. Good luck and say no to ED.

I started chewing and spitting a little while ago. I have always struggled with food and my relationship with it now is terrible. I find that my life revolves around food, whether i've eaten too much or how much weight i'll gain from eating virtually nothing. I started to chew and spit my food as a way for me to still eat the things i loved and always deprived myself of (usually sweets and chocolate) and now it has become such a major part of my life. I feel gross when i do it because i know that it isn't healthy and thinking of what i ate is just gross but i have lost a lot of weight already and it is so hard to distance myself from that. I don't know if i would be able to stop if i wanted to because of this "benefit." I didn't think that there were many people out there who chewed and spit, if anyone knows of any side effects i'd love to hear from them.

hi mike-
i see you have gotten some responses already.
i've been eating disorded for 16yrs. started in HS-and now i'm 30. it all started by not eating, then i found the world of chew/spit. it is something to concern yourself as you are doing it as a way to cope. i know you say you have it under control, but, it'll start to control you. i thought wow..i'm a genious i can chew/spit things i like and not have to worry about weight. however, your bodies metabolism will slow down b/c it's not getting what it needs. please you really don't want to be strickened w/an ED..
if you need anymore advice email me back, i could write a book, and i'm worried about you.
