Spotting for a week before my period.

I have been trying to get pregnant for 3 months and I started to spot a week before my period was due. I am still spotting and it is a week later. I took a test and it came up negitive so I don't know what is going on... I have a Dr. Appt on Sep-16th. This is not normal for me. Could I be pregnant and it is not showing up yet? Question
