Spotting on birth control;

I have been through about 5 packs of Alesse and had no side effects. Now, a week before my period is supposed to come I had brown discharge. I heard that all side effects should be over within the first 3 months of taking the pill. I have unprotected sex and I was just wondering if I was pregnant even though on the pill? Am I having implantation spotting even though I take the pill as prescribed and haven't missed any? Why am I having spotting now when it should be all over??
