Although nine in ten American adults say they wash their hands after using a public restroom, the truth is that only about eight in 10 actually do so.
A telephone survey conducted shows that women were more likely to wash their hands than men. Ninety percent of women and seventy five percent of men washed their hands after using the restroom.
Washing hands is said to be the most important thing people can do to stop the spread of illness and reduce the risk of getting sick. Experts report that cold and flu viruses are spread by hands more often than through the air from sneezing. Unfortunately, it is not just a cold that is being spread by dirty hands but also some pretty serious diseases like hepatitis A, meningitis, and infectious diarrhea.
