| I have had so many similiar experiences. Weight gain (14 pounds), depression and loss of libido. I would wake up in the morning and feel such dispair for no reason. I had my first and only shot in October. The half-life lasted until May. Since then I have lost weight (with a lot of work) and gained more interest in sex. I have also felt happier in general. However, I have had heavy periods recently with a lot of clotting. The last one I had lasted eight days and five days later it started again. Not sure how long this will go on. I am going to see a new doctor (my old one did not give my any info on all of these side effects before giving me the shot) and will ask her what I can expect. Any insights from others would be appreciated. Please tell all your friends to stay away from this nightmare! |

| hello my fellow ladies in pain. after reading all of your posts, i feel scared about going off the shot. i got my first in april and everything felt fine for the first month. but starting the second month, i had crazy mood changes! i would do mean things to my boyfriend and just be all pissy and irritable. also starting the first month, i bled like crazy, and am still bleeding to this day! (i am due for my second shot in a couple days) so that's two whole months of bleeding. whether it's heavy, not so heavy, it sucks! no weight gain, but a severe loss of sexual urges. forgive me for being blunt and maybe a little TMI, but when my boyfriend and i would have intercourse, i would rarely have an O. my libido is totally in the toilet since after the first month. thank God my symptoms aren't as worse as some of the other ladies, and my heart goes out to you all. but i have decided to go off and stay off depo. and i'm not going to put any other contraceptive in my body until i am regular again and my hormones are back to how they were before depo. and i'm really glad i found out about all these bad things before taking it for too long. and since i've only had one shot, and there's not a whole lot in my system, i hope to God that my withdrawal symptoms aren't as worse as the ones that i've read. thanks girls. wish me luck. and good luck to you all. |

|

I got the depo injection on the 27th of June.. it hasn't even been a month yet, but a week after getting the shot, I started to feel literally crazy! There seems to be this constant cloud of despair and hopelessness hanging over my head. I cry for no reason all of the time. I feel depressed, and then angry, and always frustrated. My doctor told me about the bone density loss, but she never said anything about the severe mood swings. I'm only 17. My periods have always been extremely painful, so I was looking forward to not having one, but little did I know that all of the symptoms would still be there.. ALL THE TIME.. and worse than ever. I'm due for my next shot on the 18th of September, but after reading all of these.. I'm scared to get off of it. My boyfriend hates the way this birth control is affecting me.. and I'm starting to think it's not worth it because my desire for sex is pretty much nonexistent. What do you guys recommend? Is regular birth control (the pills) any better? I've never taken them. Do they have similar symptoms?
--Tired of feeling this way.. It's almost scary. |

I'm glad I've found this website, i was on the depo for 3 yrs i came off it in feb this year because of my dramatic weight gain. For the first 2 years i was on it it was like a dream no period no mood swings and no weight gain. then i hit the 2 year marker and gained about 3 stone lost all my energy and sex drive.
now i'm off it i feel like crap, hasd anyone one else has a yuck stick brown discharge? I have this lasted about 10 days sex has been painful, it feels like my insides are bruised,
For the past week i've worried i was pregnant dispite the test being negative, i even checked up pregnancy symptons on the internet. I'm guessing it's side effects of the injection.
I thought at one point over the last 5 months that i was going thru an early menopause (i'm only 26). i just want to feel normal again. i feel dizzy and light headed, feel nausea all day long, my lower back is in agony,i feel like i've got mild flu, i can sleep but i'm tired all the time. |

Everything that I am feeling. I did take a pregnancy test (to update my last post) and of course was neg. I have not had a full period, spotted for 2 days 2 wks ago, had cramps every day since and just started spotting again yesterday. I have always had back cramps, but this time it is hurting in my stomach, back and even down the side of my left leg. The leg pain feels like you feel when you walk too much, like my legs are just tired. I'm sleeping ok, but still feel exhausted all the time. I can chalk up some of the exhaustion to taking care of my son, and stress, but I have always been a person who has tons of energy and done a pretty decent job not letting stress get to me. I also have psoriasis on my hands and feet which I've been able to keep under control since I was 19 (just turned 31 last wk) and it just won't seem to go away the last couple months. I made a doc's appt for August 14th, I read a few posts here and other places that said doc's put people on bc pills to help regulate their periods, I'm guessing this is what they'll do for me. It sucks, I lvoed depo so much while I was taking it. I lvoed not having a period, I never gained weight while I was on it, it was perfect. Even when I cycled off it i nthe past I had no problems, periods always came back right away and everything was fine. I didn't know long term use would cause so many problems! |

| I'm really starting to get annoyed. I had been on Depo for about 6 years. I hadn't had a period since I started Depo. My last shot was due in April, and I decided to come off because I knew it could take a year to be able to get pregnant again and my husband and I have been talking about kids. I started on Seasonique. I got through 11 weeks of it and started spotting so I went ahead and took my off week pills to have my period. I bleed like a normal period for a few days, but I have been spotting heavily since then. 6 WEEKS NOW!!! I just got over the breast tenderness (OMG they hurt!) and have been on a mood rollercoaster. My GYN only warned me of the bone density loss and none of the rest of this crap. I've read some of the other posts about contant bleeding. When will this stop?!? |

Like many of you, I am SO glad I found this thread.
I was on Depo-Provera for about 1 1/2 years. I started it when I was 16, and I am now 18. I had been on birth control prior to Depo to regulate my periods when my then step-mother (who worked in a hospital although not a doctor) suggested me get on the Depo shot. All I could think of was "Wow, no periods! Great!" so I asked a doctor (male) and before I knew it I got the shot the same day. I was not warned of ANYTHING, at all.
The one good thing that my doctor did (but it was actual the nurse) was give me an informative letter about the risks of the Depo Provera linking to Osteoporosis. This was one of the reasons I decided to get off of it.
My last injection was supposed to be July 26, 2008 but instead I made an appointment with my doctor (who I changed, by the way) to ask her about changing. She told me she would NEVER have put me on the Depo shot because it isn't the birth control method for me. Instead she prescribed me to Ortho-Evra birth control patches. I asked many questions about the patches since I had heard they can cause blood clots but she said I would be completely fine as long as I changed the patch location each week. I filled my prescription but have not yet started my patch because I'm not sure if I should go ahead and start the patch without the return of my period.
I have experienced weight gain. I was already a little overweight to begin with but I have gained 28 lbs because of this shot. I have been extremely stressed this past year but I believe Depo has helped me gain all that weight. I now weigh 208 lbs. Although I don't feel I look it, I know it is an extreme problem for my health.
Along with the weight gain, I have been experiencing horrible stomach cramps the past few days (It is August 11 right now). I had a stomach virus a month ago, but it isn't the same feeling. At first I thought it was just something I ate but it still has not passed. I will just get sharp pains in my abdomen at any random moment. It is horrible! I also wake up with breast tenderness, but it isn't that severe.
I'm just afraid I ruined my body. I really really want to have children in my future but I am so worried that it ruined my body. I wish I had been more informed of the risks of this method of birth control. I mean, I wasn't even sure what Depo did to your body!
I have never been so wanting of my period.... I'll post when it returns. |

Thank you all so much for sharing your stories. You have eased the mind of my 18 year old daughter. She was in tears when she told me tonight about her pains and symptoms that made her feel like she was pregnant. She even told me about taking a pregnancy test tonight and it coming back negative.
I found the beginning thread by googling and I am glad I did. I think now her symptoms are from her being off the depo shot for a month now. Phewwwww.....
Thank you all so very much!!!!!!!! |

| IT'S 8/22/08 AND MY LAST DEPO SHOT WAS 03/13/08. I WAS SUPPOSE TO GO BACK FOR MY SHOT THAT JUNE BUT DIDNT, BECAUSE I WAS CONCERNED ADOUT FERTILITY BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN ON IT FOR TWO AND A HALF YEARS. IVE HEARD STORIES OF WOMAN GETTING PREGNANT SOON AFTER THEY GOT OFF THE SHOT EVEN THOUGH STUDIES SHOW THAT IT SUPPOSE TO TAKE UP TO 6 TO 12 MONTHS TO POSSIBLY GET PREGNANT. WELL I HAVE BEEN FEELING NAUSEA ALL DAY ALMOST EVERY DAY, PALPUTATIONS,FATIGUE,AND STILL NO PERIOD. YES I HAVE EXPERIANCED NO PERIOD WITH THE SHOT BUT EVERY TIME I WAS LATE GETTING IT I GOT A PERIOD. EVEN WHEN I GOT OFF OF THE SHOT FOR A FEW MONTHS PRIOR TO THIS TIME I STILL GOT ONE EVERY 24 DAYS THAT LASTED FOR FOUR DAYS. EVEN THOUGH THE PREGNANCY TEST SAYS NEGATIVE IM STILL WORRIED. THERE IS A SUCH THING A EPTOPIC PREGNANCY AND THOSE DONT SHOW ON A URINE TEST. WHAT THE HELL IS GOIN ON PLEASE CAN I JUST HAVE A PERIOD, *I NEVER TOUGHT I WOULD EVER SAY THAT* |

| Serina....i just want to thank you for posting your very graphic explanation of what you went through. That was my sunday. My husband even asked if I wanted him to get me a test. I felt aweful and my boobs hurt so bad!!! but i have only been off the shot @3 months after 9 years on it. I still haven't taken the test because I don't want to get my hopes up. But I really appreciate you sharing your experience so openly. |
