New study found that stress has great impact on cancer progression even after the tumor is removed through operation. This new study proved that stress before, during and after surgery impairs immune system functioning and it can lead to cancer recurrence. Researchers claim that this study is first one that shows that psychological fear may be no less important than real physiological tissue damage in suppressing immune competence.

Some previous findings claimed that immune system is weakened because tissue is damaged and this leads to cancer metastases after an operation. Experts found in this new study that stress hormones released before and during surgery caused much of the devastating effects of surgery on immune competence.

During the study experts tried to integrate stimulation of the immune system just before surgery and prevent its suppression. They claim that by boosting the immune system and blocking its suppression a day before surgery, during surgery and after surgery they may be able to provide an intervention program that can extend people’s lives and potentially increase their chances for survival.
