New study on rats showed that pain disappeared for a period of three months when scientists injected them a gene that triggers endorphin in spine. Endorphin is body’s natural pain killer. It’s interesting that injection didn’t hurt the rest of the nervous system and there were no side – effects from current pain relief. Researchers said that in more then 65% of cases drugs don’t relieve cancer pain and because many drugs have severe side effects such as extreme sleepiness and hallucinations many patients avoid these drugs no matter to pain in order to preserve lucidity.

Because of that this study represents great importance. Researchers say this study is in early stage but concept of using gene therapy to provide pain relief has great potentional because it has less side effects than conventional pain relief. This could be of great importance to cancer patients who suffer from chronic pain and there’s still no satisfactory treatment for resolving this problem.

Scientists say that its too early to give good prognosis for this research but one step is already finished and they know that there are great results in animal models for treating chronic pain.
