Researchers managed to find relation between inflammation and cancer through receptor called TRAIL. During the research on mice scientists took mice without this receptor in their cells and exposed them to radiation so they could develop chronic pneumonia and observed them. They found that mice developed tumors beside pneumonia and this finding clearly represents connection between risk of developing cancer and inflammation in those subjects who lacked the TRAIL receptor.

Good thing about this study is that it provides new and totally unexpected model that implicates a TRAIL pathway deficiency in the chronic toxicity which is a result of radiation therapy. Researchers are now looking for inflammatory molecules within tumor tissue so they can prove that inflammation is related to risk of cancer. Results of this study represents new way to observe possibility of developing cancer and it can be beginning of new therapy for cancer treatment and way of decreasing side effects of radiation.
