Patients diagnosed with prostate cancer have three options in their treatment. First one is so called “watchful waiting” which basically means doing nothing because cancer can be slow to develop, second option is radiation therapy and the third is removal of the gland which can lead to impotence and incontinence.
One of the researches followed patients with early-stage prostate cancer during 10 years period.
They all received one of this treatments and the research compared the effects of all three methods used in treatment. It also payed attention to specific effect on death from it.
Result was that in short period (up to five years) there was no difference in survival of prostate cancer based on the method of therapy they received. This was no case when researchers observed patients in ten years period. This study found that patients who received radiotherapy or no treatment at all had increased risk of death compared with patients who removed the gland.
After ten years survival rates more then 80% for patients who removed the gland, about 75% for patients who received radiation therapy, 70% for watchful waiting, 40% for hormone therapy and about 70% for patients who received some other treatment.
It’s concluded that prostatectomy gives the best results in long term survival and that is particularly in young patients and those with poorly differentiated tumours. |
