Study Found Why Smokers Have Trouble Sleeping

New study found interesting fact that people who smoke have four times more chance to feel tired when they wake up and they spend less time in deep sleep than people who don’t smoke. Researchers say that this may happened because smokers experience nicotine withdrawal every night and that can lead to sleep disturbances. They say that it’s possible that smoking has time – dependent effects across the sleep period and people who smoke have trouble falling asleep because of the stimulating effects of nicotine and as night continues withdrawal from nicotine may further contribute to disturbances during the sleep.

During the study experts researched sleep patterns of 40 people who smoke and 40 people who are nonsmokers. Results showed that 22% of smokers said they had trouble sleeping while only 5% of nonsmokers experienced the same. Smokers also said that they had lower percentage of deep sleep than nonsmokers. Largest differences in sleep between these two groups was at the onset of sleep and this suggests that the effects of nicotine are strongest in early stages of sleep and they decrease in time during the sleep.

Researchers say that these findings may contribute to finding some other ways to help people stop smoking. One of the experts said that by understanding the temporal effects of nicotine on sleep researchers can find nicotine replacement that could minimize the withdrawal effects that smokers experience.
