Study Reports That Antiepileptic Drugs Carry Suicide Risk

During the recent research scientist found that a drug that’s being used to treat epilepsy, migraine headaches and other conditions can increase risk of suicidal thoughts and suicidal behavior. Researchers reported that patients who took antiepileptic drugs had two times more risk of suicidal thoughts when compared to patients who took placebo during the research. They said that the risk is equal to about two patients per one thousand in the drug treatment groups to become suicidal than in the placebo groups.

Scientist are now advising manufacturers of marketed antiepileptic drugs to include this information in the labeling for these drugs. Researchers examined several antiepileptic drugs and some of them are on the market for years. Participants in the study were divided into two groups. One received antiepileptic drug and the other group received placebo. Results confirmed that there were four suicides among patients in the first group and none in the other group.

Results of the study also confirmed that there were about one hundred suicidal thoughts cases in the group that received drug during research and about 30 in the group who took placebo.
