A study performed to check the benefits of such suit showed that the risks of dying during childbirth due to hemorrhage were decreased by two thirds.
The suit is light-weighed, reusable and consists of five segments with Velcro. It pushes blood from the lower parts of the body back to the vital organs if a woman starts to hemorrhage.
Statistics show that hemorrhage causes a third of the 500,000 deaths a year during birth. During hemorrhage, blood accumulates in the legs and abdomen and the brain, heart and lungs don’t get enough oxygen.
The suit has been shown to push the blood from the lower parts of the body back to the vital organs and maintain woman alive until she receives transfusion. So, it doesn’t prevent or treat hemorrhage, it only buys time until the woman gets appropriate help. The study showed that women who had the suit on, lost two times less blood than women who didn’t have it.
Advantages of the suit are that it is easily applied and that it could be used many times and that no medical training is necessary for it.
The suit is aimed at women in developing countries because some of them still give birth at home. |
