Hello! My sister has been having problems with urinary tract infection for many years. Each time she has the same symptoms - low abdominal pain and burning during urination. She already knows the whole procedure; she takes her urine and brings it to the laboratory to culture it. Her doctor then prescribes antibiotics according the bacteria that were found in the urine. Last few times she took Macrobid and it helped her but last time her doctor prescribed Augmentin instead Macrobid. Why?

Hello! Well, urinary tract infections could repeat and this could be very disturbing to the patient. Macrobid is used only for the treatment of acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections. Augmentin is an antibiotic in a group of drugs called penicillin drugs. Augmentin is also used to fight bacteria in the body. Macrobid is used only for urinary tract infections and Augmentin is used in treatment of many different infections caused by bacteria, such as pneumonia, ear infections, sinusitis, bronchitis and urinary tract infections. Bacteria found in your sister’ urine most probably became resistant to Macrobid which is possible if she didn’t take this medicine exactly as prescribed or ended the therapy earlier then prescribed, so her doctor decided to use another agent with broader tissue distribution.
