Measles are quite rare nowadays since all kids get (or at least should) measles-mumps-rubella immunizations through a vaccine at 12 to 15 months of age and again at 4 to 6 years of age. It rarely happens that the immunity diminishes since they got the vaccine.
Anyway, if a child was not immunized, s/he can get the virus by the infected person sneezing and coughing as viral droplets may be spread through the air.
The first symptoms include dry cough, watery-red eyes, fever and a runny nose. The virus may also cause small red spots with blue-white centers that show inside the mouth. They are called Koplik's spots.
A rash that follows looks like red-brown blotches and appears on forehead first and spreads to the face, neck, and body, to the feet.
If your child has been diagnosed with measles, you should make sure that s/he stays in bed, rests and drinks a lot of fluids. Keep him/her away from seeing other kids that haven’t been immunized. The symptoms resolve on their own, without a treatment and there are no drugs for viruses. |
