Symptons related to the common colds

Is swollen glands a sympton that is related to the common cold?
When I went to the doctors today, it was brought it to my attention that my right thyroid gland is swollen and there is fluid in my right ear canal . When I asked the doctor what was wrong he said a blood test will give him the answers. He reminded that I had a swollen gland this time last year. (Were towards the end of winter) and antiobiodicts brought the swelling down. I am very curious as my dad is having medical attention for his swollen thyroid glands as a tumor was found a couple of months ago. And he is having is second biopsy tomorrow.


Concerned.
