Hi, my son always had biting and chewing problems but he is diagnosed with TMJ disorder. A dentist gave him some pain killers and proposed a splint. What are other treatment options for TMJ disorder?
Hi, TMJ disorder treatment depends on severity of case and needs professional evaluation of case. If your dentist proposed a splint, I believe you should follow his advice. Other treatment options for TMJ disorder include: pain relief medications like nonsteroidal anti -inflammatory drugs, it is recommended to take soft food, muscle relaxants are administrated sometimes, sometimes even injection of cortisone or lidocain is needed. Some support physical therapy which includes: gentle massage or stretching exercises and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). But, most effective are certainly surgical methods, providing a permanent solution.
