Taking the first pill on sunday

So i have read that if you take your first pill on sunday while you are on your period means you dont have to use a back up method anymore (ex: condoms). Is this correct? Even though me any my girlfriend didn't use a condom and shes on birth control now, i still don't "finish" inside, i still pull out. But we did have sex more than once that day if it makes a difference.

P.S. It was 5-6 days after she started to take the pill.
