Terrible cramps...can birth control help?

My periods are really heavy every month and my cramps are so awful that I end up lying in bed for most of the day with a heating pad on my stomach, even with pain killers every four hours. I made an appointment with a gynecologist. Is it possible that they will put me on the pill?
