Terrible pains right below the ribs.

I've been symptoms very much like gastritis but also i've been having some strong stabbing pains in the area directly below my rib cage. They've been happening randomly and when they happen the pain is intense. I've found that i can stop the attack by inhaling deeply and holding my breath but it still hurts when they start and they have begun to worry me. It acts up more when i do anything physical like walking. Anyone know what it might be or is it just a strange effect of gastritis?
