Recently I started to suffer from terrible pain located in my groin region and in my testicles.
I become very frightened because I am 50 years old and I suspected on testicle cancer as a possible cause.
I contacted my GP and he discovered that I have bilateral inguinal hernia.
So, my doctor scheduled me for an operation of both side hernias for a week from now.
He didn’t inform me of any possible operation’s complications but I read somewhere that there are some serious complication of it like testicular atrophy, loss of libido and depression.
Is this true? Did anybody have any experience with these kinds of operations earlier?

Yes, you are right, there are several possible complications of this operation.
I don’t know why your doctor didn’t tell you more about this so I will try because my brother had this kind of operation few years ago.
Ischemic orchitis progressing to testicular atrophy is one of the most devastating complications of hernia repair.
The primary etiology of testicular atrophy is surgical trauma to the testicular veins of the spermatic cord.
Risk of complications could be significantly higher if the patient previously had bilateral repairs.
Because, at surgery, the surgeon founds a significant amount of scar tissue and by removing it, he can remove great amount of normal testicle tissue.
Patients were found to have depression, decreased libido, hot flashes, loss of hair, gynecomastia and bilateral testicular retraction and atrophy.
So, ask your doctor about possible complications and than decide what to do and remember- there's no specific treatment to reverse testicular atrophy once it has occurred.

I speak from experience having had a recurring right inguinal hernia repaired. After recovering from the operation, I had zero libido. A test found my testosterone level to be very low. I was referred to an endocrinologist who determined that the blood supply had been cut off to my testicles during the operation. A visit to a urologist confirmed the diagnosis. For several years I tried a daily application of Androgel (a testosterone gel that one rubs into the skin usually in the shoulder area) but after a while I decided it wasn't doing any good, and I stopped using it. Accordingly, I no longer have any sexual function.
