Yesterday I heard that one of my good friends has Korsakoff's syndrome. First I didn’t know what it is but then I read about it in one book. I was really surprised that this can happen to my friend. Still I don’t know why thiamine is so important and tell me, please, what exactly is Korsakoff's syndrome?

Korsakoff's syndrome is a memory disorder which is caused by a deficiency of thiamine. Thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, is one of the B vitamins and it plays an important role in helping the body metabolize carbohydrates and fat to produce energy. Thiamine is involved in a variety of reactions which provide energy to the neurons of the brain.
