i just wanted to add something in here. i had that tightness and hard to breathe feeling. mine actually was caused by anxiety related issues, but not actual stress or anxiety. i have mitral valve prolapse, which makes my heart beat irregularly fast and causes anxiety-like side effects. one of which being the tight throat and chest. i now take toprol to keep down my heart rate and have felt pretty good since. if you can't find another answer, this may be something to look into. it has many different "symptoms" and almost no one has the same, so you can't check if that may be what it is. you just have to listen to your body and try to guess what it's telling you. maybe this might help.

My symptoms are swelling of the throat, bottoms of feet, face, lips, hives.. and I was prescribed Steroids but my symptoms have come and gone for 6 weeks now. I take antihisamine for the hives and the steroids. It's very unpleasant.. Wondered if anyone else had the same symptoms.

hi I am 48 years old and last spring I started having trouble with my throat feeling like something is stuck in it. I have trouble breathing and my heart rate and presure had been going up as well. Went to the doc and told him I had been waking up at 3:00 to 4:00 in the morning with the back of my neckcovered in sweat and my heart rate was 120 to 138 bpm and I couldn't get a deep breath. Did an ekg and blood work and told me I had astham and gave me a perscription and I should feel better. Well 3 wks later I was back and told him I still felt as if something was in my throat and if they could go in and scrap out my glands I would feeel better, he thought I was nuts from the look I got. Gave me a cortisone shot and said I would fell better, I did for a week and a half, keep on using the medicine for astham and was back at the office again. This time I was told I had anxiety and he put me on lexapro and I would feel better. I took a half of one and felt as if my head was going to explode I was still having trouble with my heart racing and the breathing spells had gotten worst . I was back in there again cause my chest was hurting under my left bust felt as if I had a cracked rib. The took xrays couldn't see one but it must be cracked and this time sent me home with pain pills. I felt little pain, but as soon as that was gone it was back. Went to another doc and he did some heart test and looked at blood work and xrays and said I had tyhcardica and put me on a beta-blocker and I do feel some better. I am not waking up at night with the problems and can somewhat feel normal but still having troble with the feeling of something in the throat ( swelling, tightness, feeling of chocking) and still having breathing troubles. I am next month going to a cardic doc and see what he thinks, my MD doesn't know what else to do so he is sending me there. I hope we can figure out what is causing this. I am sick of feeling like I am 70 years old.

It is absolutley STRESS. I also went to the E.R. twice and they said my throat was fine. I go see a therapist for my anxiety and she's agreed with the doctors that it is stress. They gave me a mild calming pill and the sensation totaly went away. Try "Calms" , you can find it in any grocery store. It felt like someone was wrapping their hands around my throat and squeezing...your not alone Smile

PostPosted: 06/06/07 - 04:58    Post subject: a possible clue that worked for my wife Vote now! Reply with quote

My wife was having very similar issues with her throat swelling either after chewing, or sometimes even thinking about food. After looking into a lot of the same options as mentioned here, I did some web searches using "throat swells after eating" and came up with a few links mentioning Saliva Glands being blocked. There are 3 different Saliva glands in your mouth and sometimes a "growth" or "seed" grows to block the opening of one or more of the glands. When you eat or start to think of eating your glands start generating Saliva to aid in the digestion of the food. When the gland(s) are blocked they swell with saliva, and seem to gradually release after a period of time. This seems to have been my wife's problem. If the gland(s) is/are blocked, there are a few things we found that may help. My wife will not use conventional prescriptions unless it's almost life or death so we looked at only natural/herbal cures. Purified (Caloidal(sp?)) Silver is a liquid supplement that is taken orally that we found at our Health Food Store. The bottles of the stuff explain dosing I believe. Our chiropractor also recommended "Parotid PMG" made by "Standard Process, Inc." out of Palmyra, WI (which is only sold through licensed resellers) of which our Chiro is one. It is a tablet, and is very inexpensive. About $12 for 90 tablets. I am not sure which did the trick for her, but she eats with no concerns anymore. Now if I could only find a natural cure for her Sinus issues. I am just offering what worked for my wife. I also read that if the blockages cannot be resolved naturally, a "enterologist (sp?)" can use a fine wire tool and possibly clear the blockage manually as an outpatient procedure. As the last resort, the is a slightly invasive surgery that can "excise" or remove the blockage if it cannot be done with the fine wire instrument.

Hi All. It has been about 7+ months now that I have been on this ride. The one thing that you may want to check in many of these circumstances is your TSH levels. I just found out after 6+ months my doc had me on the wrong doseage of Synthroid, (not high enough). I kept complaining that I was tired lathergic, cound not concentrate, and everything sort of hurt. He checked the recommendation from the endocrinologist and found that my level was still 25% higher than it should be. He changed the dosage last week, and I am starting to feel a little more like myself. Still have some swollen lymph nodes in the neck, and still have a feeling like there is something in my throat, but these seem to be lessening? Or perhaps I am hoping...

Cheers,,

I felt the chest pain and it'd come right before I goto sleep. I get into heavy breathing and seriously feels like my throat swelled up and there's something.

I've had it for a little over a week and this past weekend I went out to Yellowstone park. for 3 nights, I slept well without having any breathing problem or chest pain.
As soon as I got back to my hometown, I started breathing heavily. I figured this has to do with stress and things I am thinking about.

So I dont think any medication will do other than, go on a break, relax and do other things to get rid of your stress. Smile

I went to an internist yesterday because I fell like that my throat is swollen on one side. He suggested we look into GERD or acid reflux. He gave me prevacid also, to take half hour before I eat. I looked into the symptoms of acid reflux: throat irritation and constriction, pain in ears, lump in throat. Every antibiotic they gave me, made it worse. Today is the first day I feel like I am not choking, before this I had to chew them and I was having chest pains. Please, I think you should consider this as a source of your problem. I am eating creamy soups and yogurt or cereal with milk now, because that's all I could handle. I’ve talked with my brother, he has GERD and his symptoms were different, more in his chest. I also felt my life was dependent on my throat swelling, it is horrible.

It's anxiety people. If you have taken all of the tests and they come back negative then it has to be in your head. It's amazing what the mind can do. Yes the symptoms are real but they are not caused by anything that will kill you. Its uncomfortable and really scary yes I know because I am going through the same thing but the more you accept that its something you can't control the less and less you will worry about it. There is a great website anxietycentre.com that has really helped me out. As i can see from this board a lot of people are suffering from the same symptoms and yet doctors can't find anything wrong with them, that should be reassuring and make you realize that it is just a mental thing. I hope this helps, and good luck to all.

Did any of you ever consider having your Thyroid looked at? If your thyroid is swollen or has nodules in it, it can make it very difficult to swallow and feel like a 'lump' is in your throat (much like when you are about to cry, the tightness you feel in your throat is similar). Hypo and Hyperthyroidism are common things that most people overlook until you have a severe side effect. Symptoms of Hypothyroidism can be irregular heartbeat, dry hair or hair loss, weight gain, fatigue, depression, difficulty concentrating, dry skin, feeling cold (abnormally), constipation, increased or irregular minstrual flow, & difficulty conceiving. The tightness in your throat can be from a thickening of the Thyroid Gland, swollen, or small nodules which are inside the gland. The Nodules do not, in MOST cases, indicate any type of danger to you other than discomfort. Here is a link to help explain what Nodules are.
