Throat Swelling! Need advice!

Hi

I have a similar sounding thing to you all on the first page where the throat feels tight around the area behind the adams apple. The strange thing is that my main symptom is gagging / un natural gag reflex. It gets really out of control sometimes and since I have a fear of throwing up, it's horrible.

I was looking recently online about Vocal Cord Dysfunction and it certainly sounds like the description of what I feel like, except they keep going on about Wheezing and asthma and just general breathing difficulties. But I don't really seem to have them.

I think I might have a bit of reflex, as I can taste stuff in the back of my throat that doesn't seem to be normal.

My mum has a history of having a Haitus Hernia, but I don't really seem to get the same sort of symptoms that she had.

This is most odd, as it's quite paralysing... I can't sing, or talk, or lift, or dance or even walk when it's happening. I've also freaked a few people out.

I shall be watching this thread with some interest.

I have a feeling of tightening or swelling just under my jaw and down each side of my neck to about where my adam's apple is. The inside of my throat also from time to time will feel suddenly like it has just "dried up". I can't think of how else to explain it. I am so tired of this. I have been having all different kinds of weird things like this going on since I was on a course of sulfa drugs. It seems to go from one weird thing to another. I also have an annoying irritation on the sides of my tongue. The problem with my throat comes and goes so I am trying to keep track of whatever I eat to see if that's the problem.

I wish I could get an answer and a solution.

I've been to 6 doctors (2 ENTs) and nothing!!! I think it all started with a virus months ago that attacked my throat. Things started to get better and then one day I had a weird sensation in my throat....restricted, goopy, tight. That progressed into the feeling of an object in my throat. ENT gave me Prilosec, double dose, nothing. Blood work fine except for a low lymphocyte count. Submandilar salivary gland swelled up. Sensation of "chunks" in my throat. It almost feels like the chunks are going to pop into my throat but they don't. Other gland feels "chunky" as well now. Sensations increase with eating and sour things but never go away. CT scan was clear. I've read a lot about Salivary Gland issues but no one ever mentions the sensation of objects, chunks, harden things in there. Told not to "worry" but when it's there 24/7...it's kind of hard not to.

For the past several months I too have experienced the awful swelling in the throat that feels like someone has their hand around my neck squeezing. I've been to the ER, my primary doctor, ENT doctor, Gastro doctor who scoped my throat and also had an ultrasound of my thyroid. Like most of you, I also have severe acid reflux and have been successful eliminating that problem using Prevacid. However, the tightness and swelling in the throat persists.

Next week they have me seeing an allergist. I will say the one thing that helps to get the swelling down is Benadryl. In addition, to help ease the feeling and dry throat, I typically have a soothing cough drop in my mouth most of the day. I hope someone can figure why my glands are swelling ultimately causing the scary choking feeling that I deal with daily. I'll keep checking the boards for updates.

I've been out of work for 6 weeks. Throat felt like I was being choked, headache, weird sensations, severe fatigue. Stumped 2 reg. docs. Started with slightly elevated TSH so have started thyroid meds. Also tested for Epstein Bar virus for fatigue. Thought that was it but the symptoms kept on. We're doing construction in the house. My husband has no reaction. I went to my chiropractor and tested for sensitivity to the treated sheetrock (mildew and fire resistant coated) we were using. Now on supplements and have had 4 days of 80%. Hoping this is mainly an allergic response. BTW the allergist I saw just gave me prednisone and drugs to try to treat the symptoms. Also agreed there was probably environmental sensitivities. I did not go for the anxiety diagnosis from another doc. Anxiety could have been a result but I'm convinced not the cause of my symptoms. Everyone is different. Good luck.

Try taking Benadryl before you eat. If it helps, you may have an allergy. Go to an allergist. You may need to carry epi-pens with you. It could save your life. For the guy without insurance, you can buy benadryl store brand cheap anywhere. It can make you drowsy, so may sure when you try it that you are in a situation like operating dangerous equipment or where you must be very alert.

I am 20 years old and have had this throat tightness my entire life. it just recently got worse. a lot worse.
its scares me to death and i feel its never going to get better, only worse. no one around me knows what im going through other then you guys. im almost giving up hope.
ive been to sooo many specialist and er visits because of it. it feels like its closing up all the time.
they seem to think it is acid reflux, allergies, and asthma. at first they thought it was anxiety but deep down i know its not. but OF COURSE im going to be anxious when it tightens. who wouldnt be?

im starting to take my medicine like i should but i forget sometimes. hopefully once i start taking it like i should things will get better.
as bad as this sounds im glad to know that others have this as well and im not the only one.

i have the exact same problems.. and if you go to the er they say everythings fine, its anxiety.. BULL.. im so sick of dealing with this. i struggle everyday... i would like to talk more about it with you if you would like. it would make me feel better! if so please respond back!

I have read this post all the way to 2008!

I had a serious throat infection 4 years ago, once i got over it i got a scratchy feeling in my throat that didn't go away??! - according to the books and my doc it was probably reflux (??)

After the throat infection i noticed a tightening in my throat, i did have a history of anxiety (that stopped and my doc also talked about a spasm) - a few weeks ago i started feeling this small lump and the stretching got a little worst (i can breath easily and swallow but sometimes it feels like i have something that is stuck in my throat), i'm 100% healthy and now i realize that a mix of stress and reflux is the reason, there are ways to beat it, so many people have it and yet its not a well known situation.
