Hi everyone. I'm male and 20 years old. Ever since my voice tried to break at 15 or 16 I've had real big problems with it. It's only in the last 2 years that I've come to understand the problem, well not so much understand as learn how to deal with it.

The problem's with my throat. Every morning when I wake up I have to cough and clear my throat for about 2 hours until I feel like I've dislodged the phlegm that has built or something whilst I'm sleeping. Also, if I walking too much or exercising my voice goes completely. It dries up and to get an idea, without opening your mouth say 'Hmmm'. When it goes nothing will come out, perhaps the last 'm' or something. It's the same with some words, when my voice goes, only some words which have strong pronounciation will come out. And I cannot shout. Which is really annoying because it stops me from going to loud places because people can't hear me speak. I went to the doctors and they sent me to get my thyroid checked but that's normal so I don't know.

It seems as if my voice tried to break at puberty but didn't quite make it. I do sound feminine because it didn't do a very good job at breaking. I haven't found anyone that has come across this so any help I would really appreciate Smile

Hi--

I have a rare disorder called spasmodic dysphonia, which is where my vocal cords seize up and I cannot talk. I especially have a difficult time with vowel sounds and cannot raise my voice. I have to strain to get words out. This problem went misdiagnosed for years, and was attributed to anxiety.

I read about it online while looking for a support group. I now receive botox injections in my vocal cords approximately every three months and it is as miracle. You may want to get this checked out. I hope this has been helpbul to you. It could be many other things as well, such as a mass on your vocal cords that could be removed.

I've heard of a voice problem with similar symptoms and this is called mutational voice disorders. There are various treatments available from vocal excercises to thyroplasty operations. So you need to consult a otolaryngealogist who needs to examine and decide what treatment is rightfor you.

Hi,
I have also had problems with my voice. I Finally went to see an ENT about and he took a look at my vocal cords with a scope and found that I have a paralyzed vocal cord. That is why it has been impossible for me to yell or talk over crowd noise. I have also had trouble with feeling out of breath while having conversations. My ENT recomended a thyroplasty surgery, where they place an implant in the paralyzed vocal cord. I've heard that they usually get very good results. I guess I will find out the end of this month, that is when I'm scheduled for surgery. I would highly recomend asking your Dr. if you should see as ear-nose-throat specialist. I'm glad I did.

Hi, Have you had the thyroplasty yet? I have a weak vocal cord and am possibly going to have a thyroplasty next month. I would really like to chat w/someone else who has had this surgery.

This is all very well and interesting, but the final word is that you need to be examined by a knowledgable doctor.

A 14 year old who wakes with a thick throat may be nothing more than a cold... or allergy from overnight sleeping with the window open.

I would suggest taking this information to your doctor if the condition persists and asking how they would determine if this is likely to be your deal.

Good luck.
