I'm a 40 yr old female. I too have had numbness on mostly the left side of my face, lips and tongue (sometimes makes it hard to talk) arm and a few fingers for the last 3-4 weeks. Also had bad taste in my mouth I couldn't get rid of, but not so bad now. Felt like the left side of my throat was swelling and my left ear felt like there was some pressure. Have a mild but constant headache going on 4 weeks now. I went to the doctor, several times. He didn't see any problems with my glands in my throat and ears didn't look bad. I had a temp of 99.4, but didn't really get much higher. All my blood test (thyroid, white blood cell count, liver, kidneys, and blood sugar) all came back normal. Doctor put me on antibiotics, but it didn't help. I was sent to a neurologist who thought it might be trigeminal neuropathy, but MRI came back yesterday normal. He also did not suspect MS, and I guess MRI supported that. I went to the dentist as well to make sure I didn't have anything going on there. There was a small cavity, but that's it. Lupus has come up before in my past, but so far all my doctors are saying they don't think so. I have a positive ANA, but evidently the titer has to be at some certain level to suspect Lupus and mine wasn't that off (or whatever). I do have Reynaud’s syndrome and carpel tunnel. I also have a mild bulge in my neck and lower back, and I tend to have jaw problems (stiff, pop, sometimes get irritated) if that could cause any of this. One more thing ... this all started after about 2 months ago I pulled a muscle in my lower right abdomen that took a few weeks to get better. It was not getting better after 2 weeks so he did a CT scan, which was normal. The pain did get better after about 3-4 weeks but during that time my BP was a little high, he decides to put me on Hydrochlorothiazide (water pill), and also tried lisinopril w/hctz and then Bystolic. He kept changing them because I started complaining about these face and hand problems. It was at the time I started the water pill at 24 mg that the symptoms started. The neurologist thought the Bystolic could cause issues with my Reynaud’s, which may explain the fingers problems. So, I just stopped the BP med's altogether. Besides my BP seemed more normal outside of the doctor’s office and he did say it can spike, I guess due to stress and pain, while in the doctor’s office. SO, BP was most likely not the reason for any of these symptoms. Now off all med's, but symptoms still there. Just wondering if Meds may have induced any of this?

The random numbness in my hands is nothing new, I get it off and on, and pretty much use to it. It's that, along with my face issues that are freaking me out a bit. I don't recall every having this problem before. I do have stress issues and the doctor wants me to go back on Lexapro, but I find it hard to believe stress can cause all this. I feel like the doctors are pushing my positive ANA and other problems to the side, saying it doesn’t mean much. It's just so frustrating! I'm starting to feel like this will never get better. I'm just hoping like my finger numbness comes and goes, so will this.

I had the same problem after having a CT scan in January. I thought it may be an allergy because I had an itchy throat after eating certain foods. After going through a series of tests with an allergist, I learned that I had no food allergies. I will be seeing a neurologist this week. I did have a reaction to the iodine from the CT scan and think this is somehow related. My symptoms are reducing dramatically, and they seem to now be more apparent when I am stressed. Maybe the two are linked. Hopefully this too will pass.

A friend of mine had this problem and was told by a pharmacist to rinse her mouth with a half and half solution of hydrogen peroxide and water and take Benadryl. But the next day her lip was swollen and her whole mouth was "on fire." She went to an emergency room and was diagnosed with a viral infection. The doctor gave her prescriptions for a herpes virus condition. She has to continue using Benadryl as well. If it works, I won't return. If this doesn't work, I'll make another comment.

Hello folks,
I finally remembered to come back to this post. A few months ago, I was searching the responses in a panic, sure that my numb tongue and persistent sore throat were indicitive of a serious disease.
So, I went to an ear, nose and throat doctor. My sore throat is due to post nasal drip, which is especially bad because of increasing hormones due to breastfeeding. And my tongue? Drumroll please...he poked it with a stick, announced that it looks like there was some trauma to it, and asked if I bit my tongue. When I replied no, he shrugged his shoulders and said, "don't worry about it." I realized a few days later that the trauma is from a nervous habit of rubbing my tongue over my bottom teeth. After I stopped worrying about all of this, my tongue was "miraculously" healed.

Also, now you're goign to think I'm crazy (which, I probably am, just a little). Three years ago, I also had numb tongue, only this time accompanied by numb feet and numb hands. I ran to the neurologist, this time certain I had MS. I went through a whole battery of neurological tests and a brain MRI. All normal. I really pressed the neurologist on this and he told me that there are many, many, many people who come to him with numbness, but only a very few that are diagnosed with something major. I went to the chiropractor for a few months and the numbness cleared up. Personally, some of it might be a neck thing, but looking back, most of it was anxiety related. I purchased a good anxiety book that talks about physical symptoms. It says that numbness can be a sign of anxiety (numb tongues and lips too!). So, sorry this is so long, but I hope this helps some of you folks who are as nervous as I was.

And, I want to encourage all of you to lift up your eyes to the Lord. He is our strength and ever present help and he wants to hear about our struggles and help us get through them. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son Jesus, that whoever believes in him will not perish, but have eternal life. I wish I could remember that myself a little bit better...God bless.

I second what FoxyDigitalis said.
Lyme disease is called the 'great imitator'.

My sister had/has the same symptoms many of you describe here--off and on over the years--and not all at together at-once and
was finally correctly diagnosed after being tested for everything under the sun and MIS-diagnosed as solely having fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, you name it. Over 10 years of symptoms.

Seek out a "lyme-literate" doctor for inclusion or exclusion. The average or even seemingly sometimes above-average doctor doesn't know about it. It doesn't matter if you live in an endemic area or not.

I would suggest that people suffering from this and other symptoms to please check out the ILADS website and find yourself a Lyme literate doctor. Lyme disease has been found to be extremely common and horrifyingly misdiagnosed. Lyme literate doctors are few and far between, but when it comes to your health, worth the effort.
