| Thanks a lot, people! My son was supposed to get his tonsils and adenoids taken out tomorrow. Since reading all of your posts, he now refuses to go to the hospital. You people have scared him to death!! He has frequent tonsillitis, so you people are all; jeopardizing his health! And for what? Posting how you feel afterward? Give me a break!!! |

you should seek help. since when is freedom of speech a crime? We're not jeopardizing anyone's health, but INFORMING others of our experiences in hopes that they'll get some REALISTIC examples of what it's like in the aftermath. Your son is jeopardizing his own health by choosing not to go, and if he doesn't understand that or doesn't go, it's YOUR fault, and no one else's. You're the parent. do your job.
And if you were a well informed individual who is seeking to ease your son's worries then you'd do your own research and be able to easily explain to him that this board is filled with adults...ADULTS, who are expected to have a somewhat more difficult recovery than children(assuming your son is a child).
And another thing, how about you give us a break? everyone's recovery is unique but it's a far stretch from easy for most. if the pain doesn't get you then it's definitely the lack of food. It's HELPFUL to be able to share experiences with others who have been there or are going through it simultaneously because in a lot of cases, they have a vast amount of insight on little tips and tricks that helps us get through. Maybe you should try looking on the positive side of a forum rather than attacking people with useless and counterproductive insults. |

Well said pennida....stacydelgado you are a complete whackjob. I'm glad I have a place to go since surgery and yes there are posts that make me frightened...but they are real. People having a place to vent about whats going on. This is not an easy surgery for some, quite honestly I've had a few surgeries that you would think should have made this one look like a cake walk, but this is much worse. For me. If you have read this site, you will see that there are different degrees of pain that people experience.
I wont waste any more time on you...you have issues and hopefully your son went through with it if the benefits outweighed the surgery. |

I am 36 yrs old, female, and it has been 3 weeks since my surgery. My throat still hurts, and my tongue is still a little numb on one side. My favorite drink, cold milk, tastes entirely different now. There is still swelling on the left side of my throat, and the Dr. gave me steroids to try and shrink it, but that didn't help. So, when I eat, it feels like there's always food caught in the back of my throat. And, I have to drink water just to get the food to go down, each time I take a bite.
For those people asking about the tongue pain... OMG!! I agree, there should be a big warning. I NEVER expected my tongue to be covered in sores, gashes, and black and blue spots... it was horrible. I also had the white, thrush-like film on it for a long time. Couldnt' there be something that is less painful? Don't they know what that thing does to your tongue?? And, the flem and saliva would not stop flowing, which made it impossible to sleep the first 3 or 4 nights. I drank my liquid Lortab religiously up until the 14 day.
Hopefully, my taste buds will go back to normal!
good luck to all tonsillectomy victims, and ask your Dr. prior to surgery about the tongue thing!! |

I am 26 and I just had a tonsillectomy yesterday and i know my throat should be hurting pretty bad but i had NO idea that it was going to hurt this bad OMG... when i woke up from my surgery i was in unbearable amount of pain and i felt sick to my stomach and then threw up a lot of brown crap when i shouldn't have had anything on my stomach. The pain medicine they gave me was big pills and too strong for me(they would make me sick to my stomach) and i do not want to get sick again, talk about pain... and I can't even hardly swallow water let alone big pills I even asked the doctor for liquid and he still didn't give it to me. I read that you are suppose to get a local anaesthetic and i guess that would be why people are talking about there tongue being numb. Which maybe explain why the pain was so bad when i woke up, cause i didn't get that. So, now i'm having to deal with the pain with just taking alieve. I do have to say the pain is a little better than yesterday but swallowing really hurts and so does the back of my tongue it feels like the doctor pulled the crap out of it... and things do not taste very good, talking is also very hard. I really needed this done but I think people should know how bad the recovery is and make sure you get liquid pain medicine |

| I am 33 and have just had a tonsilectomy. I did a little research on the net before the op which probably wasn't the best thing to do cos there are alot of hyperchondriacs out there!!! There was very little pain the first few days after the op but then it kicked in! I made sure I ate toast the first day after the op and found that dry toast helped clear some of the healing scab material at the back of the throat. I think the worse thing was the gagging feeling at the back of the throat due to the healing process (I think) but it does eventually go away, promise there is a light at the tunnel. Some advice...make sure you get pain killers that work for you as I was prescribed tramadol (zydol) which really didn't take the pain away plus it makes you feel really strange and spaced out! I didn't get any antibiotics but was given a mouth wash to gargle with which helped numb the throat pain. I took two weeks off work to recover and didn't have any sign of bleeding after the op but did have a little earache. My tongue was numb and swollen along with the uvula after the op but it eventually wears off. |

| Hello. I just wanted to give my results after my tonsillectomy. I just turned 22 and had them out yesterday morning. Yesterday was a breeze, but I think it was because of the anesthesia. I was eating mashed potatoes and even cut up tiny pieces of meat. Today, my throat hurts more and my tongue is a little numb/tingley. Has anyone else been experiencing this? It's not bad, but just feels like it tingles when I touch it with my teeth. The pain, to me actually isn't TOO bad. It just feels like a severe case of tonsillitis, which I've had so many times, so I don't feel like I'm dying. I've been drinking lots of water and forces myself to eat small amounts of food. So, if you just had yours done and are in a lot of pain, try drinking a lot of water out of a straw and keep up with your medicine on time. Also, I woke up in the middle of the night to make sure I take the pain meds so I don't wake up dying from pain. That helped a lot. Good luck! |

actually, don't do this. I wouldn't have known either, but on my way out of the hospital the nurse told me to stay away from straws. Apparently the sucking makes it harder to heal and can make you start to bleed again.
One more thing we can't do. |

yes please don't - the suction can start the bleeding up
plus I don't think dry toast is good - I was told it could start the bleeding |
