National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism has funded a study on alcohol abuse and influence on workplace productivity, performance and safety and got some devastating results. More than 19.2 million U.S. workers have been found to work under the influence of alcohol.
Around 2,805 employed adults were interviewed through telephone to estimate alcohol induced impairment of work. The study results represent the working population of the U.S. between 18 and 65 years of age.
The survey gave some alarming responses.
Nearly 2.3 million workers drink alcohol before reporting for work. At least 8.9 million workers take alcohol once during working hours and more than 11.6 million workers said that they had worked with a hangover.
The incidence of such alcohol consumption was more common amongst men than women, especially younger, unmarried man.
Tendency to alcohol intake or influence during working hours was most commonly seen among occupations like management, sales, arts, entertainment, sports, media, food preparation and serving, building and grounds maintenance while those people with regular working hours were less likely to consume alcohol before work. |
