Lewis Goodfellow was born at 24 weeks weighing just 1lb 8oz. He was experiencing problems with his lungs as one of them failed due to the lack of oxygen and the body’s ability to get it into the boy’s bloodstream.
Many premature babies often have breathing difficulties. Doctors can blow oxygen into their lungs to help them but the bodies don’t have enough blood supply and oxygen cannot reach various areas in the rest of the body.
They came to an idea to give the baby Sildenafil, also known under the trade name of Viagra, as their last resort. The doctors warned the parents that this approach was just experimental and that it might not work.
What Sildenafil did was open up the blood vessels, so that they could capture the oxygen and carry it around the body.
Little Lewis was born in August 2006 and was finally released from hospital in January 2007.
