I'm going into my 8 month post operative thyroidectomy and I still can't extend my voice or sing. On a scale of 1-10, I'm really below a 0. I actually talk the word, can't hold a tune any more. It has been very distrubing because I am also a public speaker and can't speak for extendeds period of time.

I am wondering if there is any improvement in your voice past 8 months? I sing as a hobby only but I am really frustrated not to be able to that anymore. I cannot extend my voice and my pitch is still very low. There are days when I sense a slight improvement then goes back to low voice again.

I had my surgery on 8-14-06 every thing was fine doc said it was a dry surgery and no tube was needed and i went home the next day,, by that friday i felt good enough to venture out and do a few errands, by the end of the eve my neck was in pain... the next morning i went to the ER because of swelling ...my surgeons resident was on staff said every thing was fine and sent me home with a cold compress. One hour later i was back at the ER with a bulge the lentgh of my scar 2inchs and about a inch thick off the skin this time the surgeons associate and res. saw me, he thought it was a fluid build up just underneath the skin , but when he got in there to drain with a suringe found out it was a hematoma and so i had to have it surgically cleaned and fixed up by opening up the exact same site(so much for scars) with drainage tube for about a day(messy)...sent me home again after removing tube....its been four days since that happen but i cant tell if it swelling or another hematoma...Im a pro- singer and can get a note, but all my body pain is gone its a catch 22 situation
This me again and it has been five months since my surgeryand im very frustrated i have not been able to get my top quality of voice back i can sing baritone but i am originally a high alto soprano....with quite a range high and low....i cant do any of that ....i have been depressed and i feel lost ...i can compare it to a amputee i feel like my talent is still there but when i go to use it ...it's just not there ....i mean you do things to improve your health only to have what you have done all of your life just gone ...or your means of support just gone ....i feel like i have to find something else to be known for ...because that would be the first question most people ask about when they see me....they should have some kind of voice therepy and excercises for you ....i fell abandon by the docs......

Sad I sang all through school and some weddings. After having my thyroid removed three years ago I have terrible vocal range. I have had it looked at and my dr. blamed it on acid reflux even though when I came out of the surgery I couldnt speak at all. Make sure if singing is your life be sure to think over this kind of surgery. If I could go back I would have done the radiation instead.

I had my thyroid removed a month ago and my voice is just getting back to normal...better than 'normal'! I am a singer and was terrified that I would lose my voice....totally the opposite. While I find I have to support more than I used to (probably b/c I had gotten lazy!) I am not 'choking up' as I used to before the surgery.

I had a PARAthyroidectomy 4 weeks ago and am still unable to speak properly - my voice has been very high pitched (like a very young child), I cannot cough (or burp!) properly... I was not warned that the surgery might affect my voice and, as a keen amateur singer, I am distraught at missing a concert, a recording and, if it doesn't improve, a concert tour in France in a few weeks time. I certainly cannot sing at present. My surgeon's team say that it may take 2 months to recover and that the problem is caused by oedema (swelling) within the neck tissue. It is reassuring to read that others have recovered and can sing again. I worry that the constant strain of speaking and trying to make myself heard at work, on the phone and at meetings, is going to cause permanent damage, but the doctor said I CAN continue to use the small voice I have. This does not sound logical to me as my voice gets weaker throughout each day and is always stronger in the mornings....

My TT was 3 1/2 mos. ago. still can't extend my voice plus it's often hoarse. Also it feels like there's a brick in my throat which becomes painful when I extend my neck for more than a minute or two and is very pronounced by the end of the day. The ENT who did the surgery insists all went well and my vocal chords are moving normally. He suggested speech therapy but I had that about 10 years ago for a chronic throat problem and it was not at all helpful, so why repeat?? I miss singing in church and find the inability to shout when needed frustrating and scary in times of possible danger. Is there any hope or is this permanent?

Hello! I am not a singer, neither is my cousin who had thyroidectomy performed a couple of months ago. I just remember that her voice was hoarse for some time after the surgery. She said that this is because of damage to some nerve that was close to the thyroid. I remember that she was worried that it would stay like that but it didn’t. Her voice is normal now.

DO you think it could be the same case after a tonsillectomy??

I am also frustrated with my voice quality. I can't extend my voice, sing or scream and get very tired talking for any length of time. I knew there may be some problems due to a large multi nodule tumor which stretched the nerve so will have to wait to see if this is permanent.

I too am feeling a great deal of loss. Being able to communicate effectively is taken for granted for those of us who have learned. Being able to project a loud command or warning is important. Now I feel helpless in some situations. I'm going to have to get a whistle to alert my dogs to give me their attention when out in the yard.

I think this is a disability. Correct? Speaking is essential in this world. I'm glad I can be heard up close. However, from any distance, such as across a room, I can't be understood.
