Wal-Mart urged to stock day-after pill

Wal-Mart’s policy about not stocking emergency contraceptive pills in its pharmacies made women really angry as a coalition of women's groups and family planning organizations put pressure on them to change their decision. The women were outraged because Wal-Mart’s Stores Inc did not meet their needs.

Among the organizations that stood up against the WAl-Mart’s policy were the National Organization for Women, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Planned Parenthood and the National Council of Women's Organizations, together with a union-funded anti-Wal-Mart campaign group, WakeUpWalmart.com.

“The morning after pill” is supposed to be taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. The sooner taken, the bigger chances of preventing fertilization or implantation. In some communities, Wal-Mart may be the only pharmacy for miles around and if they didn’t provide women what they need, nobody else will.
After such reactions and some filed lawsuits by individual women, Wal-Mart's thinking about changing its policy. The main reason they did not stock morning after pills was for the business reasons as the pills are not commonly prescribed and there is less customer demand than for other medication. However, they are considering stocking the medication nationally.

All women should know that “the morning after pill” is not supposed to serve as a contraceptive but that it is only an emergency pill in case regular contraceptives fail.
