What are advantages of artificial heart valves?

My older sister had heart valves replacement few days ago. Doctor told me that they put artificial heart valve and that she will be ok very soon. I don’t know what it is exactly mechanical heart valve. Can somebody explain to me What are advantages of artificial heart valves? Thanks!

The artificial heart valves are made of different synthetic materials. The artificial valves are excellent in terms of durability, but are hindered by their tendency to coagulate the blood. It can last for life. Current research has been able to produce materials that do not cause clotting in the blood stream.
