Hello, good people. My cousin is an alcoholic for almost 20 years. He tried with treatment, but it wasn’t successful. He has been recently diagnosed Korsakoff’s syndrome. I would like to know what the symptoms are. Is there anyone who can help me? Thanks in advance for all your help. Bye!

Hi, there. Wernicke-Korsakoff’s syndrome is pretty common for long term alcoholics. It is caused by a severe acute vitamin B1 deficiency. It has two subtypes – Korsakoff’s psychosis and Wernicke’s encephalopathy. People with Korsakoff’s psychosis are confused. They show anterograde or retrograde amnesia. They also have confabulation – they simply made up something if they can’t remember how it really happened. Hallucinations are also another symptom they can have. Wernicke’s encephalopathy is characterized by nystagmus (involuntary rapid eye movements), anisocoria (unequal size if pupils), ataxia (lack of coordination in muscle movements), etc. It can even have a coma as a final result if it isn’t treated.
