Hello, guys. My friend has been recently diagnosed Munchausen syndrome. We have noticed that she constantly talks about her illnesses and symptoms and how she will go to the operation. We just didn’t know that it was a part of some mental disorder. I would like to ask what causes this syndrome.

Even Munchausen syndrome is known for a long time, the exact cause remains a mystery. Experts believe that the mix of genetics, biology and life experiences cause this syndrome. However, there is very little evidence that genetics or biology are important for this syndrome to appear. There are some risk factors that are important for developing this condition. Those are: childhood trauma, a relative’s disease, a disease in childhood resulted with nurturing, lack of self-esteem, working in healthcare, etc. Some of them wanted to be doctors, but they never realized this desire. They can also have personality disorder. This syndrome is rare, but the exact number of patients is not known. Many of them use aliases and visit different doctors and hospitals. Males have more tendency to develop it than females.
